Samurai Shodown (known as Samurai Spirits in Japan) is an upcoming fighting video game developed by SNK. It is the first entry in the franchise to be developed using Unreal Engine 4. The characters are still drawn with heavy ink lines and given paper-like textures that help give this new Samurai Shodown an art-style that sits neatly between the 2D of old and the 3D of new.
There will be 16 characters on launch, with 13 of them returning favorites like Haohmaru, the American ninja Galford, the hulking Earthquake, one-eyed swordsman Jubei, the stately Genjuro, female fencer Charlotte and the eagle-assisted Nakoruru. Samurai Shodown’s fighting system draws upon the series history. It’s less focused on combos than it is on reading your opponent and looking for an opening to land a powerful blow. It is, after all, a fighting game with heavy reliance on weapons, with fights able to be finished off by capable players in a matter of seconds, complete with cinematic sword clashes. Counters are always ready at hand - including a spin on the Just Defend mechanic from Garou - making for fights that are measured in their pace.
As you battle with weapons like katana, hooks, and épée, you build up a Rage Gauge as you take and deliver damage. Once that meter fills up, it will power up certain attacks and lets you unleash a powerful Super Special Move (available only once per match); a move called a Lightning Strike, risky but powerful attack with a hyper-stylized presentation. Players can also strip an opponent of their weapon, forcing them to fight barehanded until they can recover their blade. Genjuro's specials see hanafuda cards rip away at his opponent, Charlotte's super special sees her piercing a rose placed before her foe's heart while Galford simply tosses his dog at a rival.
The game includes a deep learning AI technology; it will study your fighting tactics in offline modes (versus, story, survival, etc.) and create “ghost” data that be uploaded and then downloaded by other players for asynchronous multiplayer challenges.
