The new installment in the Pokémon series lets you explore a new territory which is full of brand new Pokémons to capture and train. Pokémon Shield shares gameplay mechanics with its predecessors, but it also includes some new features that will surprise you and enhance your experience as you work hard to become the best Pokémon trainer.
This time we travel to the region of Galar, which presents very diverse landscapes, with rural areas, modern cities, lush forests, and steep snow-capped mountains. Humans and Pokémon live together in this region and work hand in hand to develop their industry.
In Galar, you can see large cities with prominent classical brick architecture, among other styles, as well as a huge modern city in the northern part of the region, on snowy mountains. The southern part of Galar is more rural since there are abundant plains with beautiful flowers, mounds with white geoglyphs, large and beautiful green valleys, and extensive fields of wheat.
Many of Galar's locations have stadiums where Pokémon combats are held since this is the most popular form of entertainment in the region.
Pokémon trainers who start their journey in Galar are given one of the three initial Pokémon of the region:
Grookey (Grass Starter): A mischievous Chimp Pokémon that is full of boundless curiosity.
Scorbunny (Fire Starter): A Rabbit Pokémon that is always running about, bursting with energy.
Sobble (Water Starter): A somewhat timid Water Lizard Pokémon that shoots out attacks as it hides itself in the water.
A new battle mechanic, Dynamax, is an ability that transforms your Pokemon into a giant for three turns. Pokemon that are Dynamaxed will also gain access to new, special ‘Max Moves’, which are in turn determined by a Pokemon’s broader move set. Available to use once per battle, Dynamax boosts your Pokemon's power and is triggered by a separate button, similar to Z-Moves. You can also pair up with three other trainers (locally or online) to fight wild Dynamax battles against one giant Pokemon, which you can afterward catch. These encounters are called Max Raid Battles.
Pokemon Sword and Shield also bring new characters, including new trainers and NPCs. Meet new characters, including Pokemon Champion Leon, Rival Hop, Professor Magnolia, her assistant Sonia and your first Gym leader, Milo.
Pokémon native to the game's region will be able to be transferred to the game from the 3DS Pokémon Bank, Go, and Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee via the Pokémon Home service.
