Need For Speed Heat supports cross-play from today

It's quite likely that nobody at Ghost Games would have guessed that the most significant feature of Need For Speed Heat would come from a different studio. With Criterion Games taking over the development of the long-lived racing series, Need For Speed Heat is finally offering the players the possibility of challenging players from different platforms. The final update for Need For Speed Heat adds cross-play support on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One starting today. Although it may seem that it's nothing remarkable, it turns out that Need For Speed Heat is now the first Electronic Arts game that gets cross-play and it could mean that the company is taking a new direction regarding its policies on this matter.

General manager of Criterion Games, Matt Webster, explained it in a post on Need For Speed official website:

Once you’ve installed the update (see full update notes here, including some other fixes, too), you can opt in to race players across PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. You can search for your friends who are playing on any of the above systems, given they’ve opted in for cross-play as well, inside the Find Players menu. Then, go to the new EA Friends tab in the Party Menu to see who’s online to play with.

In the same post, Webster also reveals that more announcements about Need For Speed will happen during the EA Play Live event that will take place on June 18. Considering that Criterion Games is already working on the development of the next installment in the Need For Speed series, the studio may have some news regarding it that they want to share.

Meanwhile, the recent release of Need For Speed Heat on Steam has made the game available to many more players. With the addition of the cross-play features, multiplayer competitions in the game will be more lively than ever.
