Dungeon crawlers usually have a series of features that are common to all the games in the genre. Exploring an unknown location, discovering treasures, fighting monsters, upgrading your character's skills and equipment and other similar things can be considered necessary for any game that fits the archetype. But at the end of the day, a video game needs more than having a certain structure and following a certain pattern to entice the players.
Below is a good example of that. It is a roguelike dungeon crawler that allows you to explore a place known as The Isle, which is an isolated location composed of a variety of procedurally generated labyrinthic scenarios. Permadeath and role-playing game mechanics that include a crafting system complete a set of features that you could consider quite standard, but the reason to play the game and embark yourself on a dangerous adventure over and over lies beyond those parameters. The beautiful graphics that represent a dark and dangerous world, the excitement of exploring, and the exhilarating sensation that you feel every time you discover something new are also part of what defines Below. All that makes it an irresistible adventure that will have you returning to it no matter how many times you die and have to start from the beginning.
If you already have experienced what the game has to offer you will be glad to know that Capybara Games is introducing a new gameplay mode for Below. Explore mode lowers the difficulty of the game a notch for the players that find it too difficult, allowing them to enjoy the game as if it was an action-adventure game. The old version of Below is still playable but it is now a different gameplay mode called Survival.
Capybara Games has also announced that Below will be available on PlayStation 4 very soon and even though they have not specified a release date for it, we expect to see the new version sometime this spring.
