AMD officially launches 5th generation EPYC CPUs: targeting AI, cloud, and servers

AMD has recently introduced the 5th generation EPYC processors (code-named Turin) targeting AI, cloud, and enterprise workloads, maintaining its leadership position in the server market. Utilizing the Zen 5 architecture and compatible with the SP5 platform, the EPYC 9005 Series delivers superior performance and energy efficiency compared to the previous generation, with a 2.7x higher performance for the 192-core version.

One of the standout products is the EPYC 9575F with 64 cores, designed for AI leveraging GPUs, operating at 5 GHz clock speed, 28% faster than its CPU competitors. Compared to the Zen 4 architecture, Zen 5 improves IPC by 17% for enterprise and cloud workloads, as well as 37% for AI and HPC. AMD offers two versions: a 4nm version with up to 128 cores and a 3nm Scale Out version with up to 192 cores.

Turin supports 12 channels of DDR5 ECC memory, up to 6TB per socket, 6400 MT/s speed, and 128 lanes of PCIe 5.0/CXL 2.0. Other notable features include PPR for RDIMM ECC, reducing downtime and maintenance costs. Tests show that the Turin CPU achieves a SPECrate 2017 performance 2.7 times higher than Intel's and a 60% improvement over the previous generation.

The EPYC 9965 model with 192 cores enhances video performance, enterprise applications, databases, and image rendering compared to Intel Xeon 5th generation. AMD positions EPYC Turin as the AI server CPU with support for maximum 8 GPU OAM MI300X or MI325X, helping increase AI inference performance by 20% and AI training by 15%.

In terms of performance per cost, Turin saves up to 68% in power consumption and 87% in installation space, with competitive pricing compared to Intel products. Specifically, the EPYC 9965 is priced at 14,813 USD, significantly lower than Intel's flagship Xeon 6900P priced at 17,800 USD. The EPYC 9755 is priced at 12,984 USD, also much lower than Intel's 6980P chip.
