AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D: The new affordable 3D V-Cache CPU for AM4 revealed in latest leaks

The AM4 processor socket seems to be staying around for a long time. With a couple of new chips set to be released in June, seven years after the debut of the original Ryzen 1000 series on AM4, AMD appears to be introducing another CPU for this enduring computer platform.

New filings for regulatory approval suggest that the upcoming release is named the Ryzen 5 5500X3D, and the X3D at the end implies that it comes with additional V-cache, targeted at gamers.

These filings were submitted to the Eurasian Economic Commission last week and were discovered by VideoCardz.com. Currently, we do not have any additional information, but leaks from last year, which are less reliable, indicated that the 5500X3D will have a six-core/twelve-thread design with a base clock of 3GHz and the ability to boost up to 4GHz. It is currently uncertain how available this new processor will be.

As with AMD's other Zen 3 V-Cache enhanced CPUs, we anticipate this new model to have 96MB of L3 cache. This cache size will be very beneficial for many gaming workloads, making the AMD Ryzen 5 5500X3D potentially a gaming powerhouse in the budget CPU market. However, the price of this CPU is still unknown. If AMD intends to market the 5500X3D as a budget gaming processor, it will likely need to support PCIe 4.0 graphics cards and be noticeably cheaper than the existing six-core 5600X3D (presently priced at $200 exclusively at MicroCenter retailers in the US) in order to make sense.

Although the 5500X3D has slightly lower clock speeds (in theory, 400MHz less for boost), this alleged chip should still be quite competitive. Whether this CPU actually exists, and if AMD plans to release it soon, are still significant unknowns.
