Among Us: updates are taking a long time for a good reason

Even though Among Us was released in 2018 it's not until last year that the game developed by Innersloth has become a real hit among the players. With rather simple mechanics and gameplay that focuses on an experience mostly generated by the players, this multiplayer social deduction game started rather slow but has managed to catch the attention of quite a lot of players. 

The premises of the game are easy to understand. You can take two roles in Among Us. You are either a Crewmember of a spaceship or an Impostor. As the former, your mission is to complete some maintenance tasks in the ship and try to figure out who are the Impostors. As the later, you have to sabotage the ship and kill all Crewmembers without being caught. When a corpse is discovered, it's possible to call for a vote to decide who is an Impostor, and then kick him out from the ship. This process continues until all the Impostors are caught or all the Crewmembers are killed.

 

 

As simple as it may seem, Among Us requires a high level of interaction between players and that seems to be the key for a success that has caught the developers completely off guard. Innersloth has a lot of plans to expand the content in Among Us and they already announced some of them. It's not that they have not been busy during last year. The game was launched on Nintendo Switch, Epic Games Store last year and there is a new map coming early 2021, as well as the launch of Among Us on Xbox consoles. But it seems that it's taking longer than expected to add new features to the game and Innersloth has explained the reasons behind it in the official blog of the game.

Among Us gained incredible traction pretty late into 2020 that we weren’t expecting, and that meant A LOT of change for us. [...] Not only did we need to switch back to working on Among Us after thinking it was done, but we also needed to set ourselves up more sustainably to work on the game. We had to spend 2 months just restructuring, figuring out new processes, and getting external partners to help us manage on board. 

There’s a ton of other things out of our control (legal issues, meetings, planning), so sometimes these things take longer as well.

As you can see, it's rather normal that the studio, which was originally formed by just three people, has certain problems due to the unexpected popularity of Among Us. We can be glad that they are taking their time to do things properly. Let's just hope it doesn't take them too long.
