Assassin's Creed Shadows gets delayed causing controversy

Assassin's Creed has many fans that have supported the series throughout the years. Even the latest instalment, Assassin's Creed Mirage, which was significantly different than its predecessors, had positive results. However, Ubisoft doesn't seem to go through its best moments, and this is having consequences that directly impact the developer's future releases.

Last year, Ubisoft already cancelled some projects to focus on its flagship franchises, mainly due to the bad results attained by some of its games, like Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023. After quite a few years in development, Skull and Bones was finally released in 2024, but it has mostly gone unnoticed for one reason or another. However, the big missed opportunity was Star Wars Outlaws, which was expected to be a revulsive as it's inspired by the most popular sci-fi franchise ever created. At the end of the day, not so many copies of the game have been sold.

Better later than now

Precisely, the poor results of Star Wars Outlaws are the reason behind Ubisoft's latest announcement. The highly anticipated release of Assassin's Creed Shadows has been delayed until February 2025.

"Assassin’s Creed Shadows will now be released on February 14, 2025. While the game is feature complete, the learnings from the Star Wars Outlaws release led us to provide additional time to further polish the title. This will enable the biggest entry in the franchise to fully deliver on its ambition, notably by fulfilling the promise of our dual protagonist adventure, with Naoe and Yasuke bringing two very different gameplay styles."

Ubisoft can't afford another bad launch, especially now that the company's shares are at their historical minimum. It's even more complex in the case of Assassin's Creed Shadows because there is even more at risk. Assassin's Creed has been the face of the company for many years alongside Rainbow 6, and disappointing the fans right now could put the developer in a dire situation. Therefore, it's probably a wise move to delay the launch, especially if they are not sure about the game delivering the type of experience that it should.

Unfortunately, this also means that we will have a few more months until we can discover Assassin's Creed Shadows, which promises to add many novelties to the franchise, including the first female protagonist in the series.
