Black Myth: Wukong releases... "strange" short film for Chinese New Year

Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming action role-playing game by Chinese developer Game Science, based on the classical 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. The game features gameplay similar to the "Souls" series. According to gameplay videos revealed by the developer, player will controls a monkey based on Sun Wukong, referred to in the game as the "Destined One," to embark on a daring journey to uncover the truth hidden beneath the veil of a glorious legend from the past.

On the occasion of the recent Chinese New Year, Game Science released a short film titled "What do you see in him? | Chinese New Year Short Film by Game Science." on their YouTube channel.

The short film tells the story of a young man bringing his girlfriend home to meet his family on the first day of the Lunar New Year. Instead of a warm welcome, he is berated and criticized by his parents for not meeting their expectations. In contrast, his girlfriend treats him with great care and gentleness. She is not disappointed but instead comforts him, saying that he has tried his best. Touched by her affection, he regains his determination, standing up boldly before his family, declaring that they should give him six more months. During that time, he vows to change to meet the expectations of both his parents and his girlfriend. In the final scene, we see the girlfriend spotting a monkey during a mountain climb before the film ends.

After watching the short film, many people expressed their confusion. Apart from the detail of the monkey near the end, the film has no apparent connection to the highly anticipated game Black Myth: Wukong. However, some fans think differently. They have analyzed the details in the film and linked them to Game Science's game production process:

On the surface, the video is about a guy who brought his girlfriend to his parents during New Year;s Eve, but I guess people have already understood it: The guy represent the developer themselves, girl represent us,the player, and the parents represent investor/Publisher and a implication of Tecent and Netease, and the guy shouted to the girl please give him 6 months, he will change... This is a really good statement of determination from the developer, to ensure us that they will continue polishing the game until its release day ( which is this summer, just half a year away from now).  Also, when facing parents' criticizsm, the son expressed his confidence, but he soon panicked about his girlfriend's (we fans and players) total support, he (the developer) fears that he cannot live up to her ( or in this case our) expectation.

So, the film depicts the determination of the developer to deliver the best product for us, the fans. But they also cannot avoid worrying about the community's high expectations. A concern that is understandable, as this is Game Science's first project. Many users have also responded to nickfan16060's comment, expressing sympathy with the developer and hoping for the successful release of Black Myth: Wukong in six months.

Black Myth: Wukong is scheduled to be released on August 20, 2024, on PC and Console platforms. To find the best deals on the highly awaited Black Myth: Wukong, check out dLcompare's price comparison tool.
