Announced at the E3 2019, Blair Witch gives us more news just a month before its official release. When the game was announced, we got to know very little about this video-play adaptation of the film of 1999. Until now, all we knew about Blair Witch was its scenario. Taking place in 1996, two years after the film, Ellis, a former police officer, goes looking for a nine-year-old boy in the woods, accompanied by his dog, Bullet. This expedition in the woods will be anything but a healthy walk, of course, especially since Blair Witch is directed by Bloober Team, the studio that created Layers of Fear.
In this new gameplay trailer, we can see Ellis in the woods, talking to some Jess, who is supposed to be his girlfriend. We imagine that these phrases on the phone do not represent an element of gameplay in itself, but come to flesh out the narration. On the other hand, Bullet seems to be a central element. We can interact with him and send him to do certain tasks such as digging in the ground, he can also warn us of the surrounding dangers. We also notice the camera, which we imagined to be a gameplay component in our previous article. In a video recently released by Game Informer, we can learn more about the use of the camera. It will be possible to use it to replay certain scenes in search of clues. We will also find videotapes here and there during our investigation, and what we will see in them can even affect reality. As far as fighting is concerned, our favorite weapon will be the flashlight, with which we can blind and hit our enemies. Because in Blair Witch, unlike the movie, we will have to cross their path. We can also see some monstrous forms sneaking behind the trees in the videos.
Blair Witch is, therefore, a story-telling game in which we evolve through the rustling of leaves, solving puzzles, gathering clues, and taking care of our most loyal ally, Bullet. The atmosphere seems in any case filled with relative anxiety, and that's good because that's exactly what you would expect from a game like Blair Witch. Blair Witch will be released on Xbox One and PC via Steam on August 30th, while the GOG version without DRM has been postponed until later this year.
