One of the most fascinating JRPGs to come out of the 1990s, Live A Live was for the longest time available only in Japan. It was since remastered and released in the West for the Nintendo Switch in 2022. This time, however, it’s going to see a wider release as it comes to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam on April 27. Check out the Live A Live trailer here:
Live A Live is a unique story structure that features seven different stories spread out across different eras of time: prehistoric, medieval Europe, Imperial China, the Wild West, ancient Japan, and even the distant future. You can play any of these vignettes in the order you want. You meet seven endearing characters who eventually join forces in a culminating battle for the world’s survival against the physical form of hatred itself.
The remastered version uses a fusion of 2D sprites and 3D graphics pioneered by Octopath Traveler and also featured in Triangle Strategy. Aside from the gorgeous graphics, the game is also fully voice-acted and features a remastered soundtrack by the original composer, Yoko Shimamura. Each character has unique mechanics to differentiate them in every scenario. Pogo the caveman can use his keen sense of smell to track down NPCs, while the ninja Oboromaru can camouflage himself, hiding in plain sight. While combat still follows a grid system, the enemies and mechanics are unique per character. The Sundown Kid wields a pistol and attacks from long range, but Masaru is a present-day melee fighter who can learn martial arts techniques from the opponents he faces.
Live A Live will launch on Steam, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 this April 27. If you’re a fan of classic JRPGs, you can catch a Live A Live PS5 key at the lowest prices from our comparator today.
