It's been a while since we could obliterate demons to our heart's content in DOOM 3. The third installment of the first-person shooting series was released in 2004 and it was followed by a remastered version with enhanced visuals and new features in 2012, DOOM 3 BFG Edition. Right now, the fans are more focused on DOOM Eternal, but things may change in the close future, at least when it comes to PlayStation VR users. Bethesda has announced a new version of DOOM 3 specially designed to take advantage of the capabilities of Sony's VR headset. The announcement is accompanied by a video that gives us some insight into the type of experience that DOOM 3 VR Edition will offer.
DOOM 3 VR Edition will include the base game and its two expansions, Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission. It will feature enhancements specially created for this version, allowing you to peek around the corners and put the motion controls to the best use, also including a brand new wrist-mounted display to check your status.
This VR version of DOOM 3 will not bring any changes to the storyline in the single-player campaign and will continue to offer the same experience, but this time it will feel more real than ever. The game takes you to planet Mars, where the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) has established a facility to conduct research on a variety of fields. You will arrive at the place as a space marine corporal and will soon discover that there are strange things happening. Your investigation will end pitting you against the forces of Hell in a thrilling first-person shooting experience.
DOOM 3 VR Edition will launch on March 29 for PlayStation 4 and you can play it on PlayStation 5 via backward compatibility. Of course, you will need to own a PS VR headset to play the game.
