Dragon Age: The Veilguard does not let you control your companions

We already know that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be significantly different from its predecessors in many aspects. The game will not feature an open world for you to explore as you please and combat will definitely be more action-oriented than in previous installments in the series. However, the most notable difference is probably that you won't have direct control over your companions' actions during combat in the new Dragon Age. Companions are a very important part of the story in Dragon Age games, but they also have a relevant role in combat as they open the door to many powerful interactions between skills. In Dragon Age 3: Inquisition, your party composition and what your companions did in combat could decide the outcome of a battle. However, it's not going to be like that in the upcoming game, and BioWare has clarified the reasons behind this.

Focusing on the main character

In a recent interview, Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche has delved into this matter, which is becoming one of the most controversial aspects of the game. The reason behind this change is that your character will be able to perform a significantly higher number of actions per minute in the game. This would ultimately lead to excessive micromanagement if you also were to control companions. That's why they have decided to make them more autonomous than in previous games while allowing you to activate abilities through the wheel menu. The idea is that the experience feels more fluid and less cluttered while still allowing you to enjoy tactical combat.

While a higher relevance of your character in combat due to having more actions is more than desirable and opens new tactical paths, we won't really get a feel of the experience until we can play the game. However, those who loved previous Dragon Age games but saw companion management as a tedious chore will surely be excited by these changes. All in all, Dragon Age: The Veilguard seems to be a game that will mark a new path for the franchise.
