Everything We Know About New World

Everything We Know About New World

With New World about to hit shelves in a few days, it's time to gather everything we know about Amazon Game Studio's sprawlingMMORPG before its release. Hopefully, these tidbits of information will help you not just to survive but thrive in the untouched land of Aeternum.

First of all, check out IGN's New World trailer now.

New World Game Story

Based on the age of exploration during the 17th century, New World has you playing an intrepid explorer stepping onto a strange, magical land called Aeternum, the Eternal Isle. You are all searching for a powerful substance called Azoth, which is said to bestow everlasting life. But as shown in the New World trailer, the land is afflicted by the Corruption, a force capable of turning creatures it infects into grotesque monstrosities. It's up to you to tame and conquer this land, even if it means competing with fellow explorers to do it.

As you wander through Aeternum, you’ll come across many mysteries and secrets—most of which are deadly. It won’t be an easy road to follow, so you need to be prepared. Read on to learn more about how to play the Amazon New World game.

New World Gameplay

New World is an MMORPG with both PvP and PvE elements. Your objective is to control as much territory as you can for your faction. You may explore the land, kill monsters, and craft items from ingredients. You may join groups of other explorers to fight bosses or play in events. If you wish to fight against other players, you need to flag yourself for PvP.

The New World map is divided into territories and settlements. All players will vie for control of these territories. The more your faction controls, the more powerful it becomes.

Azoth

One of the most important tasks for players is to collect Azoth, a powerful, supernatural resource that works as currency in New World. There are other resources, but Azoth is crucial for players for creating their builds. It’s a requirement for resetting weapon talents, for fast travel, and for crafting better gear.

New World doesn’t make Azoth easy to acquire. To obtain some players need to:

  • Complete quests - Azoth will be given as rewards for quests, starting level 15.
  • Defeating enemies - Foes will drop Azoth once players reach level 20. The higher the enemy level, the more Azoth they drop.
  • Corruption Points - Clear a corruption point of all enemies, and you’ll be rewarded with Azoth.
  • Harvesting - Special harvesting tools enhanced with the ability to harvest Azoth will yield 1 Azoth each time they are used.

How to Level Up

One crucial thing to note about New World gameplay is that it doesn’t use classes. Instead, you create your own character build based on the weapons you decide to specialize in.

As you level up, you obtain skill points and abilities. You can assign skill points to any weapons you want, but you can only equip two of them at any given time, so choose carefully.

New World has three different systems for leveling. The first is character stats, the second is weapons skills, and finally, trade skills.

Attributes Leveling

When leveling up, there are five attributes you can invest in:

  • Strength - determines your base damage for melee attacks.
  • Dexterity - determines your base damage for ranged weapon attacks.
  • Constitution - determines your base health.
  • Focus - determines your base mana and lowers the cooldown time.
  • Intelligence - determines your base magic attack.

Weapon Types

There are four kinds of weapons to specialize in:

  • One-handed: Swords, Hatchets, Rapiers.
  • Two-handed: War Hammers, Great Axes, Spears.
  • Ranged: Bows, Muskets.
  • Magic: Flame Stavess, Ice Gauntlets, Life Staves.

Trade Skills

These are non-combat skills that are necessary for driving the economy in Aeternum. They’re categorized as follows:

  • Crafting - Includes Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Arcana, Cooking, and Furnishing.
  • Gathering - Includes Mining, Tracking and Skinning, Fishing, Logging, and Harvesting.
  • Refining - Includes Smelting, Stonecutting, Leatherworking, Weaving, and Woodworking.

New World Factions

One can’t stay neutral in Aeternum. Eventually, you are required to join one of three powerful factions, each with its own agenda and values:

  • Marauders — warriors who believe that martial might is what will conquer Aeternum. They resemble the Spanish Conquistadors, and their favored color is green.
  • Syndicate — Scholars who have dedicated themselves to searching for the truth. They are distinguished by their robes and plague doctor attire and their choice of the color purple.
  • Covenant — Religious zealots who have dedicated themselves to worshipping the Spark. Their clothes and buildings are all Church-themed, and their predominant color is orange.

While joining a faction is unavoidable, it does carry certain benefits. Each faction aims to control as much of Aeternum as they can. The more territories your faction controls, the greater the benefits it confers. Your attacks against the creatures of Aeternum are more powerful, you gather more resources, the items you craft have better base stats, and you find more loot.

The faction can also give missions to players, which can be PvP or PvE. Accomplishing PvE missions rewards players with Faction currency, which can be used to buy faction-specific items. PvE missions can range from killing monsters to collecting resources.

PvP missions, on the other hand, entail taking action against an enemy faction. This can mean going on patrols in search of enemy players, gathering intelligence, or delivering essential messages to another territory. Succeeding in these missions grants you faction currency and increases your influence in that territory while undermining the enemy faction.

Companies

Once you’ve joined a faction, you can also join a Company from your faction or make one of your own. Companies are player-run organizations that work as the eyes and hands of the factions. Each company can have as many as 100 members.

Member rankings in a company are as follows:

  • Governor - the highest-ranking officer, given to the player who starts the company. Company Governors also become the Governors of the territory their company conquers. They decide what town projects to undertake, what upgrades to apply, and what taxes to levy.
  • Consul - the second-in-command of a Company. They have roughly the same powers as a Governor but can’t set limits on Treasury withdrawal, nor can they withdraw directly from the Treasury.
  • Officer - have the power to invite or remove members of the company.
  • Settler - the lowest rank. They can chat with other members and add to the Treasury.

PvP and Declaring War

Once you have sufficiently undermined an enemy faction’s influence in a territory, you can render them vulnerable to a declaration of war. Once this happens, any Company may declare war against a territory to attack it. Time is allotted for Companies to join in the declaration.

A lottery is then held for participating companies who have contributed at least 10% of the influence needed to undermine the territory. The winner of the lottery is declared the Vanguard for the war. The Vanguard will act as war leaders, choosing which members will fill the ranks of the attackers. At the same time, the defending faction will also have time to prepare and recruit defenders. As such, part of New World’s mechanics is influencing players to your cause. The victors of the 50v50 combat will determine who will control the territory.

Combat

New World presents a Souls-like playstyle in that there is no auto-aim—every melee or ranged attack needs to be properly timed and aimed to connect. The same goes for blocking and dodging. According to Creative Director David Verfaillie:

New World’s combat system is action-based, where positioning, timing and attack choice all matter. Our combat system is based on physical hit detection – the attack capsules of an attacker’s weapons have to hit the defensive capsules that move in sync with the defender’s animation.”

As such, there is no to-hit chance or dodge skill. You have to perform the actions yourself to either hit or dodge, making Player vs. Player combat entirely skill-based.

New World Game Modes

There are several activities to enjoy with other players in New World.

  • War - join a siege battle where you fight in a 50v50 PvP. Attackers will attempt to take the fort while defenders try to hold out for 30 minutes.
  • Expedition - A party of five players may explore dungeons to solve puzzles, face bosses, and gain treasure. A party with balanced strengths is recommended.
  • Invasion - players defend their fort for 30 minutes from an invasion of corrupted creatures. If they fail, their territory gets downgraded.
  • Outpost Rush - A 20v20 PvP battle where two sides fight for control of strongholds and resources.
