Everything we know about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

Gearbox’s Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is launching this March 25. An irreverent take on tabletop RPGs and Borderlands lore itself, Wonderlands was inspired by the Borderlands DLC Assault on Dragon Keep, which was itself inspired by the RPG Dungeons & Dragons. Have a look at the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands launch trailer to see exactly how deep this rabbit hole goes:

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands' Story

Who is Tiny Tina?

First introduced in Borderlands 2, Tiny Tina is a manic, unstable thirteen-year-old recognized as one of the greatest demolitions experts in Pandora. Tiny Tina lives to blow things up. A creation of Anthony Burch, head writer for Borderlands 2, she is voiced by his sister, Ashly Burch, who plays Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West.

Tiny Tina returns as the Bunker Master, the GM for a new session of Bunkers and Badasses.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands features even more celebrities: Andy Samberg plays the “headstrong” Captain Valentine, Wanda Sykes plays the “rule-obsessed” robot named Frett, and Will Arnette as the villainous Dragon Lord. We will also see the return of Butt Stallion as ruler of Wonderland.

Of course, you’ll be in the hands of Tiny Tina, who is pretty much the goddess of this world as the Bunker Master. Keep a sharp eye out for trouble.

Gameplay

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands takes the shooter-looter concept of Borderlands and mixes it with RPG elements such as spellcasting. The game takes place in a fantasy-themed world with lots of elements from and references to Borderlands. Though it is inspired by the Assault on Dragon Keep DLC, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is very much its own thing and can be played without going through any of the Borderlands games.

Players take on the role of the Fatemaker, who is the Chosen One tasked to purge evil from the land. You may create your own character using a Character generator. Here are the six classes coming out at launch:

  • Stabbomancer —  a steal-based class who can sneak up behind enemies and stab them in the back.
  • Brr-Zerker —  an ice-powered barbarian class who deals Cryo damage. Good for engaging in melee.

  • Clawbringer — wields a giant hammer and specializes in elemental magic, specifically fire and lightning. The Clawbringer also has a wyvern as a companion.
  • Spellshot — a magic class that can use both guns and spells to defeat their enemy.
  • Graveborn — dark magic users who can sacrifice some of their health to boost their magic.

  • Sporewarden — specializes in nature magic to turn the tide, and is accompanied by a mushroom that spews toxic clouds.

Every class has a Feat, Action Skills, and a skill tree you can level up in. As you go higher in levels, you can also take on a second class, which you can change after completing the game.

Location, location, location

The game takes place on a giant Overworld gameboard where characters appear as bobblehead miniatures of themselves. Here they can move to new locations and face encounters by moving over them and entering a new map.

You’ll find various places of interest and dungeons to explore as you wander through Wonderland. Some of these are:

  • Brighthoof - the capital of the Wonderlands, and the seat of power for Queen Butt Stallion. Currently, it’s fighting off evil invaders.
  • Sunfang Oasis - a paradise in the middle of the desert filled with green plants and explorable ruins. Also the home of the villainous Coiled.
  • Tangledrift - a giant beanstalk large enough to house a population. People have resided here to keep away from the monsters below.

Since this is a Borderlands game, you’ll also see all manner of nonsense on the board, like giant cans spilling rivers of soda and many-sided RPG dice lying around the landscape.

You can expect mayhem, wacky action, and lots of quirky guns for your character to collect. You’ll also find amulets, armor, and melee weapons to complete your build. There may not be grenades like the original Borderlands, but the game makes up for it with explosive spells and magical effects.

Multiplayer Madness

You can play Wonderland solo or with up to three other friends in multiplayer co-op through a drop-in/drop-out system. The game features co-op level scaling, wherein a single party will face the same enemy at different difficulties, scaled according to their level. For example, if you are at level 15 while your friend is at level 10, you will face an orc at level 15 while your friend simultaneously fights that same orc at level 10. You can change this feature in the multiplayer settings if you prefer not to use it.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ Chaos Chamber

After completing the game, players unlock a special game mode called the Chaos Chamber.

The Chaos Chamber provides additional gameplay after finishing the main quest, and is meant to be a source of items you can use for your next main game playthrough. Each run is divided into two parts. You fight through three randomly-generated rooms before facing a mini-boss. After that, there are three more rooms to go until the final boss.

After completing a non-boss room, you get to pick between two portals, which give you a heads up on the rooms ahead. This means you have some control as to what you’ll face. Also, if you die before killing the final boss, you still keep the loot you’ve already acquired in your playthrough.

Each run through the Chaos Chamber takes about 20-30 minutes. When you complete it, you earn Moon Orbs, which you can spend at the Brighthoof Enchantment Re-roller station. This station lets you randomly replace the Enchantment on your gear,  which will help players who are aiming to perfect their character build.

You also get another important currency from the Chaos Chamber: Crystals. You can obtain them by destroying the crystal rainbow die that appears each time you complete a room, or you can get them by completing side quests.

It’s important to get as many Crystals as you can. First, they raise the number of rewards you get from a Chaos Chamber run.

Second, you can spend Crystals on an altar in the Chamber to get Blessings that buff your character. You can stack buffs, but each visit to the altar would subsequently require more Crystals.

Alternatively, you can spend the Crystals on Curses. These are anti-buffs, making the rooms harder for you but also raising the number of Crystals you obtain as a reward.

Finally, once you’re past the last boss, you encounter rabbit statues that will accept your Crystals in exchange for loot.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands' DLCs

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has already announced DLCs with the upcoming Season Pass. It will contain four DLCs, each one patterned after a D&D adventure module.

The DLCs occur in “illusionary worlds” that you access through the Mirrors of Mystery. Each of these worlds brings you new enemies, and of course, the chance to get Legendary loot.

The structure is the same for each adventure: you go through five levels with a boss fight at the end. Once beaten, the boss then becomes part of the Chaos Chamber, so you can fight it again. And to keep things interesting, the difficulty of the DLCs increases if you go the world again after finishing it the first time.

One final note: after the final DLC, Gearbox will release a seventh character class for players to use, complete with its own Feats, Action Skills, and skill tree. The addition of a new class gives players more reasons to replay the entire game and DLCs, as well as come up with new builds to experiment with.
