Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is still on track according to developers

Square Enix has gone on record to say that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Part 2 to the wildly successful Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is still due to launch this Winter. According to a statement by producer Yoshinori Kitase, the game is “progressing smoothly and according to plan,” and their priority now is having a firm launch date:

It seems that Square Enix is attempting to allay fears of a delay after Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was not included in the PlayStation Showcase back in May. News had been sparse for a year, although creative director Tetsuya Nomura did announce that work has started on Part 3, which doesn’t have a name yet.

A change in the timeline

Fans have been looking forward to Rebirth ever since they completed Part 1, which ended in  a cliffhanger that teased an entirely new timeline from the original Final Fantasy VII story. As stated by the Remake’s ending, “'The Unknown Journey Will Continue.” The directors hinted that the story will “differ significantly from the original," such that any player would be able to enjoy Rebirth without even knowing the story of FFVII

Players will also have more freedom to explore the world this time around. According to game director Naoki Hamaguchi, “Players will be able to journey across the wide and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom, experiencing a myriad of different stories along the way.”

Will we see Final Fantasy VII Rebirth by the end of this year? We can only hope that Square Enix delivers on time.
