FromSoftware is one of the most successful video game developer studios due to the massive popularity of the Dark Souls series. The Japanese studio has created many games featuring a unique combat system that is the origin of a genre by itself. Rather than stopping after Bloodborne, Elden Ring and the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, FromSoftware has opted to release a new co-op roguelike game set in the universe of Elden Ring. Nobody anticipated that Elden Ring: Nightreign was going to be a multiplayer game, but it was even more surprising to see the announcement of The Duskbloods, an upcoming multiplayer experience that will be exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2.
The Duskbloods has generated a big hype already, but its announcement has also raised some concerns about the future of the Japanese developer studio. Many players fear that FromSoftware may have shifted its focus to multiplayer games entirely, which would be a great loss for those who love the uniqueness of the studio's single-player experiences. Fortunately, it does not seem the case.
FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed that the studio has not abandoned single-player games in an interview with Nintendo regarding The Duskbloods.
"Yes, I’ve always found the PvPvE structure very interesting. It allows for a broad range of game-design ideas, while also letting us leverage our experience of designing challenging enemy encounters.
As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward."
The Duskbloods will undoubtedly become a major hit once Nintendo's new console is available, however, Miyazaki also reminded the fans of the studio that Elden Ring will be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2 too. Whether you prefer single-player or multiplayer experiences that bear the unmistakable brand of the studio, there will be enough options for you to choose from if you purchase the new console. In any case, it's surprising that FromSoftware has decided to release a totally new game as an exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2 when Elden Ring: Nightreign will arrive barely a few days earlier. A port would have made more sense, somehow, but the exclusivity of The Duskbloods will definitely help sell the Switch 2.
