After revealing Midnight Suns and Guardians of the Galaxy, Marvel is digging deeper into the gaming side of business by announcing two new games featuring their properties. In the recent Playstation Showcase, developer Insomniac gave us our first glimpse of Spiderman 2.
Here Come the Spider-men
The announcement trailer is just enough to whet our appetites for more of the web-slinger. As appropriate to the sequel title, we’re getting not just one Spider-man but two: Miles Morales joins the fray after getting his solo outing in the previous Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Those familiar with comic book lore will likely recognize the narrator as Kraven the Hunter. But it’s the familiar face at the end that has gotten players excited. Yes, Venom, voiced by horror movie legend Tony Todd, is coming to the Spider-man franchise. There's no news if he’s going to be friend, foe, or something in between, but we’ll surely know more the closer we get to release.
That’s not all that Insomniac has in store for Marvel fans, however. They also gave us a first look at latest project featuring one of the most popular X-Men characters and also the world’s grumpiest Canadian:
Yes, James “Wolverine” Howlett, he of the adamantium claws, is getting his own game. While not much else has been revealed apart from what’s in the teaser, Insomniac’s Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations Ryan Schneider has this to say:
Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone game being directed by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director), who recently led the creative efforts on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a game we’re extremely proud of at Insomniac. In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special.
When are Spiderman 2 and Wolverine going to be released?
Spiderman 2 is slated for 2023 and will be a PS5 exclusive. No release date has been set for Wolverine, but it will also be a PS5 exclusive. Need your fix of Marvel’s web-slinger? You can compare prices for Spider-man and Spider-man: Miles Morales on our website.
