It is almost time for Mortal Kombat 12

NetherRealm Studios just dropped another teaser for the next Mortal Kombat game and it looks like it’s about time. MK co-creator Ed Boon posted a short video featuring a clock ticking down to 12, only to skip it and go directly to 1. Could this be a hint of a franchise reboot? Check out the Mortal Kombat 12 teaser here:

Time and time again

There are some clues pointing to time travel or shifting histories in the new MK. The very first teaser, featured at the end of the franchise’s 30th-anniversary video, showed a single grain of sand falling through an hourglass before exploding into something that looks like the Big Bang.

This left the fandom in a flurry of speculation. The foremost theory is that the sand came from Kronika’s Hourglass. The antagonist of Mortal Kombat 11, Kronika used her Hourglass to shape the timeline itself, hence how MK characters got to meet their younger counterparts and guests from other realities.

Of course, the heroes managed to wrest the Hourglass from Kronika and attempted to reset the timeline. We may be seeing the effects of such an attempt. We may also witness enormous changes to MK history—maybe even an entirely new universe.

In any case, Warner Bros. has already stated that Mortal Kombat 12 is launching this year, so we should see more solid information and a release date coming soon. As the teaser claimed, “it is almost time.”

In other MK-related news, Lord of the Rings and The Boys star Karl Urban is in final talks to play Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie. Simon McQuoid, director of the 2021 film, is also set to come back.

With that, we just have to wait (hopefully not long) for solid announcements on Mortal Kombat 12. If you haven’t played the previous game yet, you don’t have to wait. Grab a Mortal Kombat 11 Xbox key from our comparator today.
