Today marks the Silent Hill Transmission event and it was a shocker. Konami has confirmed nearly every rumor that has come out over the past few months: we are getting multiple Silent Hill games, including a Silent Hill 2 remake. You can check out the stream in the link here:
There’s a lot to unpack from the stream so let’s get started.
The Silent Hill 2 remake is underway, to be developed by the Bloober Team. Whether or not that’s good news depends on whether you liked their games, which include The Medium, Observer, and Layers of Fear. Regardless, they’ve released a trailer that very much adheres to the original game’s atmosphere of psychological terror while updating it with stunning graphics.
Silent Hill 2 follows widower James Sunderland who, after losing his beloved wife Mary, receives a letter from her asking him to come to Silent Hill. What follows is a mind-bending dive into the supernatural intersection of a wicked, haunted town and one man’s tortured mind.
The teaser shows us tantalizing looks at the cast and monsters such as the bubble-headed nurses and fan-favorite Pyramid Head. The game will use a third-person perspective and will have an updated combat system too.
When it came out in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2 was both a critical and commercial darling, selling over a million copies in North America, Japan, and Europe. Konami hopes to recreate that magic by bringing back series composer Akira Yamaoka and concept artist/creature designer Masahiro Ito.
Silent Hill 2 doesn’t have a release date yet, but we do know it will be locked to PlayStation 5 and PC for 12 months. The required specs have already been released and it looks like the game will need some serious hardware.
Konami has a lot more Silent Hill in store, announcing three new games during the stream. Unfortunately, the information we got is still bare bones, with no platforms or release windows.
The first of these games is Silent Hill Ascension, due for release next year.
Ascension has a different take on the Silent Hill approach—it appears to be an interactive narrative in the mold of Until Dawn and The Quarry. It also seems to be roguelike—if you get a game over, you have to start from the beginning.
The next game is Silent Hill f. Those with trypophobia, please be warned this is unpleasant.
Another entry that breaks the mold, Silent Hill f isn’t based in a spooky American town but in a Japanese one that seems to be infected by spooky fast-growing fungi, much like Resident Evil 7 and The Last of Us. What this has to do with Silent Hill remains to be seen. All we know is that it is being developed by Neobards Entertainment and written by acclaimed psychological horror writer Ryukishi07.
The final game is Silent Hill Townfall, developed by No Code, makers of Observation and Stories Untold, and published by Annapurna Interactive. As with the original game, Townfall will focus on “deep psychological horror,” but there’s not much else to share about it apart from the teaser.
As a final note, a new Silent Hill movie is coming out: Return to Silent Hill, to be helmed by the director of the original 2006 movie, Christophe Gans. He had previously shared that there are multiple Silent Hill games in the works, and it turned out he was speaking the truth. According to producer Victor Hadida, the idea is to "make it modern, but also very true to the video game.” Here’s hoping the new film turns out well.
We’re currently waiting for a launch date for Silent Hill 2. You can also keep an eye out for a good price for a Silent Hill 2 PS5 code from our comparator.
