To long-time XCOM fans, Long War is a legendary series of mods that alter the already excellent base game into something far deeper and more intense. Beginning from 2012's XCOM 1, The Long War adds tougher enemies, additional classes, a more detailed tech tree, frequent enemy retaliation, and greater risks in every mission you go on. The point of Long War is to make players weigh the risks versus the reward of each mission they take, because each one could mean a complete wipeout of the strike team. Most times, it feels like you're inching your way to victory.
Now, after years of waiting, we have a Long War mod for XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, currently available on Steam. Check out a guide and playthrough from syken4games:
A Long War mod for vanilla XCOM 2 has existed for some time now, but the DLC War of the Chosen fundamentally changes the base game such that when War of the Chosen came out, the mod was no longer compatible. It took several more years for Long War of the Chosen to finally be made.
Long War of the Chosen makes several profound changes to the expansion, which are all listed in ufopaedia.org. For one thing, regions with resistance cells play a highly prominent role. You need to establish contact with them and get their help to uncover missions. Before you can send a team on the mission, you need to gather information on it before the time limit expires.
As with previous Long War mods, you need to obtain materials, weapons, alien corpses, and intel to unlock tech tree items. You also get new soldier classes and ranks.
Of course, just because you succeed in a mission doesn't mean you'll have an easier time. ADVENT is an even deadlier force to be reckoned with. They will retaliate by raising security levels in the region and striking at your resistance camps. Worse, both the Chosen and Alien Rulers (from the Alien Hunters DLC) are even stronger this time around and will make every mission they are on hair-raising indeed. But you'll also savor greater satisfaction with every hard-won mission.
Long War of the Chosen is the most extensive mod for XCOM 2. Once you get into it, it's very difficult to put down, and you may never want to go with the vanilla game again. If you're going for the Long War, be prepared to spend hundreds of hours and don't get too attached to your soldiers. Get the base game by purchasing PC CD keys to XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. You can also pick up XCOM: Enemy Unknown and its expansion, XCOM: Enemy Within.
