The Japanese RPG fantasy Metaphor: ReFantazio has launched to high fan expectations and quickly achieved remarkable success. Just one day after its release, the game sold an impressive one million copies.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the biggest JRPG release of the year. Featuring several developers from the Persona series, including director Katsura Hashino and character artist Shigenori Soejima, Metaphor: ReFantazio shares many similarities with Persona, particularly in its lengthy gameplay experience. However, while the Persona games are set in modern-day Japanese school environments, Metaphor: ReFantazio takes place in a medieval fantasy world and does not include romance options, offering a unique atmosphere and setting for the game.
 


Metaphor: ReFantazio reaches 1 million copies sold on release day

Sega has announced that Metaphor: ReFantazio sold over one million copies globally within just 24 hours of its release, counting both digital and physical sales across PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This milestone makes it Atlus' best-selling game to date. In comparison, Persona 3 Reload, another hit from Atlus, took a full week to reach one million sales, highlighting the exceptional performance of Metaphor: ReFantazio.

According to SteamDB, Metaphor: ReFantazio reached 61,969 concurrent players on Steam, surpassing Persona 5 Royal’s launch peak of 35,474 concurrent players in 2022 and Persona 3 Reload’s 45,002 earlier this year.

The success of Metaphor: ReFantazio is likely due in part to its foundation on Persona 5’s success. While the Persona series is beloved by many, its lengthy playtime and multiple sequels can be intimidating to new players.
