Nintendo officially confirms the existence of a Switch successor

Nintendo has officially confirmed the existence of a successor to its hybrid console, the Switch. It was Nintendo's own president, Shuntaro Furukawa, who broke the news. According to Furukawa, they will announce the successor to the Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year, which began in April and runs until March 2025. In the same announcement, however, Furukawa stated they will hold a Nintendo Direct in June regarding the Nintendo Switch game lineup for the latter half of 2024. However, to temper expectations, the president said there would be no information regarding the successor to the Switch in this Direct.

After much speculation, rumors, and leaks, Nintendo has finally confirmed the existence of the successor to the Switch. Some speculate that the new console will launch in March 2025, with an announcement reserved for Fall 2024. Others, more pessimistic, believe that Nintendo's latest console will only arrive in 2026. Meanwhile, the Japanese publisher is preparing a new Direct for June to showcase new games for the hybrid console. For now, we only have two first-party releases planned for the year, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake.

During the fiscal report, Nintendo announced that two recent first-party releases, Princess Peach: Showtime! and Mario vs. Donkey Kong, have surpassed the 1 million units sold mark. A Direct in June should replenish the Switch's lineup, although pundits speculate that the showcase will be filled with announcements of more remasters and remakes.

The fiscal report also confirmed that the Switch has sold a total of 141 million units so far. If the console continues at this pace, it has a solid potential to surpass the sales of the Nintendo DS (154 million units) and the PlayStation 2 (155 million units). That's why some estimate that in the Fall, Nintendo will announce the successor to the Switch alongside Metroid Prime 4, a cross-generation game. Metroid Prime Remastered was announced and shadow-dropped, winning back fans worldwide. It wouldn't be strange if the Direct showcase announced Metroid Prime Remastered 2 and released it on the spot.

Apart from the fact that we will have a Nintendo Direct in June and the successor to the Switch exists, the rest is all conjecture. Furukawa may also be playing coy, trying to misdirect players' expectations. Meanwhile, all we can do is enjoy the wonderful Switch library.
