PlayStation and AMD join forces to develop AI for improved graphics and ray tracing

With the launch of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony has ventured into the realm of AI gaming, with Chief Architect Mark Cerny eager to delve deeper into this field. To achieve this, Sony (PlayStation) and AMD have formed a partnership named "Project Amethyst," which focuses on leveraging deep AI technologies to enhance gameplay and graphics.

AMD already has an existing relationship with Sony, serving as the hardware provider for the PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, and PS5 Pro. The modern PlayStation franchise relies on AMD's hardware. Now, Sony and AMD are strengthening their collaboration. The two companies currently work together on the GPUs of the PS5 and PS5 Pro, which are based on AMD's RDNA 2 architecture. Additionally, the PS5 Pro employs a feature known as PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) to enhance image clarity and frame rates.

In the realm of AI, both Sony and AMD share common objectives. They aim to utilize AI to improve their gaming hardware. Rather than pursuing separate paths, Sony and AMD are collaborating on future AI architectures while developing a "democratized library for machine learning" that game developers can access. Sony also intends to create "CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) for Games."

It's important to note that Sony's "Amethyst" collaboration with AMD is not focused on the development of exclusive hardware for either AMD or PlayStation. Instead, it aims to create tools and architectures that will allow AI and machine learning to revolutionize gaming. This initiative will enable AI hardware to perform a wider range of tasks beyond just upscaling. Through this collaboration, Sony and AMD intend to enhance game graphics and gameplay in innovative and exciting ways.
