Pokémon Scarlet & Violet announced for Switch

The game duo from Game Freak's classic franchise has been presented. At the end of Pokémon Day's Pokémon Presents event held this Sunday (27), Game Freak announced the new duo in their classic franchise: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, the ninth generation of Pokémon. Both are set to arrive in late 2022 on Nintendo Switch.

The trailer shown by the Pokémon Company revealed the starters of the new generation. Sprigatito, a grass cat, Fuecoco, a fire crocodile, and Quaxly, a water duckling. According to the game's official website, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will "take a new evolutionary step, allowing you to explore freely in a richly expressed open world."

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet to feature a true open world

In a similar fashion as Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but with more freedom and less segmented areas, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet will bring a sprawling open world to explore. That is, the initial promise they made regarding Pokémon Legends. Although the region's name has yet to be revealed, it features diverse, mostly wooded environments with many new Pokémons and several towns to explore.

It seems that the transition from one town to another will be more seamless, without the borders separating them from the wilderness during the journey. No further details about the region itself have been revealed, but some fans have speculated that it's inspired by Spain.

The Pokémon Presents celebration event is in honor of the franchise's anniversary. There were several franchise-related announcements during the celebration, such as Pokémon GO, Pokémon Unite, and more.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus, for example, received a free update titled Daybreak, which features a brand new quest promising battles against more powerful creatures.
