Return to Monkey Island is shipping out in 2022

Guybrush Threepwood lives! It’s been almost 32 years since the very first Curse of Monkey Island hit the shelves and signaled the peak of LucasArts’ point-and-click adventure games. It’s also been 13 years since the last entry to the series, Telltale's Tales of Monkey Island. But finally, we have a proper sequel with Return to Monkey Island, launching later this year and picking up from where Monkey Island 2 left off. Here’s the announcement trailer.

All aboard

Series creator Ron Gilbert is returning to direct Return to Monkey Island. It will be developed by Gilbert’s own Terrible Toybox Studios in cooperation with LucasArts and Devolver Digital.

The new game also marks the return of the writing team of Gilbert and Dave Grossman, who co-wrote the original Monkey Island. But they're not the only ones coming back. Dominic Armato, the original voice of hapless pirate Guybrush Threepwood is also onboard, along with composers Michael Land, Peter McConnel, and Clint Bajakian.

A pirate’s life for me

"A little something we've been working on for the past 2 years in complete secrecy," said Gilbert. It’s good to know the pandemic has kept him busy.

It’s also notable that Gilbert had previously announced that if he was making another Monkey Island game, he would announce it on April 1. True enough, he announced the new game on his website on the specified date.
