SEGA announces Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

The Yakuza series has changed quite a bit in recent years, especially with the release of Yakuza Like a Dragon. Not only this game introduced a brand-new protagonist in the series but it also went overboard with new gameplay mechanics, including a turn-based combat system that generated plenty of controversy among the fans of the long-lived series. However, far from having a negative impact on the series, the release of such a game boosted its popularity. SEGA then started using many of the game's features to offer a new type of experience in the following instalments. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth was the first game that took action outside of Japan, with Hawaii as a new and exciting scenario for players to discover. The success of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth will serve as a stepping stone to launch a new spin-off, which was announced recently.

A pirate story

SEGA and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have officially announced that the new game in the Yakuza series will be Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. With such a descriptive name, there is no doubt about the theme of the game, however, a video accompanies the announcement and illustrates the kind of content players will find in the new Like a Dragon game.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will bring back Goro Majima as the protagonist in a spin-off that seems to be somehow linked to the events in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Even though both games share the same scenario, the beautiful Hawaii archipelago, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is not an installment in the main series but a spin-off that will leave aside turn-based mechanics to focus on delivering an exciting action-based combat experience. An original story will be at the core of a new Yakuza adventure that will surprise the fans once more.

“Goro Majima, a notorious ex-yakuza suddenly finds himself shipwrecked on a remote island in the Pacific. Unable to remember even his own name, he sets sail in search of clues to his lost memories, accompanied by a boy named Noah who saved his life. Before long, they’re caught up in a conflict between cutthroat criminals, modern-day pirates, and other scoundrels over a legendary treasure.”

There is no doubt that Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will feature everything that the fans love, including a multitude of mini-games to enjoy as they progress in their adventure. The release of the game is scheduled for February 28, 2025, and it will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
