System Shock remake will release this March

Adding to the pile of survival horror remakes is the upcoming System Shock remake. Along with Dead Space, this remake is a cult classic that is coming to a new engine. The good news is that developer Nightdive Studios has announced that the game is on track for a March 2023 release. Check out the trailer introducing the terrifying AI overlord, SHODAN:

A long time coming

One might be tempted to take this announcement with a healthy dose of skepticism. After all, Nightdive Studios had previously announced the remake back in 2016 after acquiring the rights from Looking Glass Studios. The studio then went into hiatus until 2018, after raising close to $1M to make the game. Production was then restarted and a release window was set for 2021, then moved to 2022. That said, the developers insisted that they "picked a few last things to share before the quickly approaching launch window of March 2023.” They added that “this is not the first time announcing a tentative launch window, but over the past few years much has changed - the scope and scale of the project have evolved dramatically.”

Against the machine

How dramatic a change are we expecting? The trailer shows an enormous leap in graphical quality and atmosphere. Citadel Station, where the action takes place, has received an upgrade as well, particularly for the finale. The enemies will be receiving a similar upgrade, according to Nightdive:

"As you know dismemberment has been a high priority for us and every enemy is receiving a completely custom dismemberment model. There are a lot of enemies and the amount of effort being spent on this is staggering.”

If the System Shock remake sells well, perhaps we can also expect a remake of the even more beloved System Shock 2.
