In a rare turn of events, CD Projekt Red has actually confirmed a rumor instead of leaving fans to wonder. The image they teased for their new The Witcher game shows a medallion from the School of the Lynx, a Witcher school that didn't exist before now.
According to global communication director Robert Malinowski:
"Some mysteries should not be so mysterious", "I can confirm that the medallion is, in fact, shaped after a lynx."
There is, of course, no Lynx school in Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher books. What we have are the schools of the Cat, the Griffin, and the Wolf, to which the protagonist Geralt belongs. The School of the Lynx does have roots in a popular fanfiction featuring fellow Witcher Vesemir, though whether or not CDPR is alluding to this work is a mystery.
It’s been noted before that Ciri does wear a medallion that references the School of the Cat. While a different school from the Lynx, it’s not a far-off jump, and given that Geralt forged her a new sword at the end of The Witcher 3, we may yet see Ciri as the lead for the fourth Witcher game.
Then again, there is the possibility that instead of an established character, the fourth game will allow players to make their own Witcher character from the ground up, rather like in Elden Ring.
We don’t know if the game will follow Ciri, a player-made character, or someone entirely new, but it seems certain Geralt’s run in The Witcher is over. We’ll just have to wait and see what The Witcher 4 will have in store.
We have a long time to go before the new The Witcher game arrives, but there’s still The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, The Witcher: Thronebreaker which focuses on Vesemir, and the popular card game Gwent to tide us over.
