After Last Day of June two weeks ago, and Overcooked, the frenetic cooking game from last week, it's Torchlight's turn to be offered for free by Epic Games until July 18th. Released in 2009, Torchlight was to be the basis of a game, a "pilot project". It was developed by Travis Baldree, creator of Fate, as well as Max Schaefer, Erich Schaefer, and Peter Hu, three former members of Blizzard North, the studio behind Diablo, who together founded Runic Games. Dissolved in 2017, the studio's aim was to create an MMORPG similar to Diablo, and Torchlight was sort of their test strip. Except that Torchlight has finally met a great success with players and critic, and some even call it "the best hack 'n' slash since Diablo." The game then benefited from a sequel, Torchlight II, and a new installment, Torchlight Frontiers is slated to come out in 2019.
Torchlight is a single-player game in which you will play as one of three heroes: the Destroyer, the Conqueror, and the Alchemist, in a fantasy world. The story unfolds in a city whose main wealth is a mineral called ember. It holds incredible power and can corrupt or enchant anyone who touches it. Since it is a powerful and rare material, it grabs the attention of honest people, but also of demonic creatures led by the evil Ordrak, who tries to create black ember, that is even more powerful than the original ore. The mine of ember is deserted and a mage named Alric disappears there. As a hero, you must investigate these events and try to find Alric.
The gameplay of Torchlight is strongly reminiscent of Diablo, with a mix of hack 'n' slash and action-adventure. You'll explore dungeons, fight enemies, gain loot, and experience. You will be able, depending on the character you choose, to use different skills and different types of weapons. The Destroyer is a fan of melee and can summon spirits. The Conqueror fights mainly from a distance with weapons such as the bow and can set traps. Finally, the Alchemist fights with his magic and can summon robots. If you're tempted by the adventure, do not waste a minute, Torchlight is free now and until July 18th on Epic Games Store.
