What’s inside MS Flight Simulator’s free Top Gun update

We’ve previously reported that Microsoft Flight Simulator has a free update featuring a Top Gun-themed expansion. Well, strap yourself in—after months of delay, the update is finally here, timed to release alongside the Tom Cruise movie.

Developed by Asobo, this update is available today for the PC and Xbox versions of Flight Simulator. Now that it’s finally out, we can see what the update has in store.

Firstly, the game features three training missions for Top Gun’s iconic plane, the F/A-18 Super Hornet. According to the game, it should help newcomers master its "radical flight maneuvers including unrestricted take-offs, split S maneuvers, and low altitude, high-speed maneuvering through complex terrain.” The Super Hornet plane itself was already included in last year’s update after the movie and the expansion were delayed. Included in this update, however, is Maverick’s livery.

Those looking for more of a challenge get something too. Also included are “five high-speed, low-level challenges that require utmost skill to navigate just above mountains and traverse through canyons.” Alternatively, you can try out one of the toughest air force maneuvers, the carrier deck landing challenge.

Apart from the F/A-18E, Asobo has teased a new plane, a “hypersonic aircraft that can attain speeds of Mach 10 and altitudes greater than 150,000 feet above sea level.” According to Reddit users, this fits the description of the Aurora Darkstar SR-91, so it’s likely that aircraft. Also included is a mission that takes place high up in the stratosphere.

There are lots to look forward to with Microsoft Flight Simulator. Asobo has made it clear that we can expect updates like DLSS support and the addition of helicopters. So if you haven’t picked it up yet, you can get an affordable Microsoft Flight Simulator Xbox code straight from our price comparator.
